Cali Doubles

okie. finally i have been here for about 2 whole weeks. ba. its really fine=)
I don't particularly think that there is anything cool about being in the States.. its more or less the same. So its very much being the grass is greener on the other side. but well. I think i am starting to observe the actual lifestyle of the people here in depth because.. YES. SCHOOL STARTED.
haha.. to my frens out there who cant stand seeing me slack and relax, yes. my school has started. so has assignments readings etc etc (not that i have started doing them=p) Language was not a problem (always thought that if NUS Students can understand the accent of the Indian Profs back at home, there is no reason not to be able to understand anyone else). The location, however, is freaking different. GOSH. BLACKBOARDS. haha.. this is kinda funny. reminiscence of the Primary School days. havent seen a blackboard ever since Primary 2!! and its ALOT of blackboards!! say a classroom has 4 walls. 3 will be covered with the blackboard. haha.. whoa. meaning they could have written from wall-to-wall. Textbooks here are so expensive and now that I kn0w i need them for my assignment, its like. gosh. i should have bought it in Singapore. nevermind the luggage weight etc etc. The school is a confusing place. there is just no pattern to how the buildings were constructed. I just keep getting lost. haha.. even though i'll eventually get to the place. But still. Isnt it super demoralizing? haha..Bicycles are everywhere, with traffic so heavy that it is just getting impossible to walk from one pavement to the other.
Rented a car and went to the outlet mall at Ventura, a freaking 1hr drive away. haha.. lawrence said that driving in the States is incredibly SHIOK. but yup. navigating in the states is uber stressful. haha.. the instructions wrote, turn to storke road.
Lawr: As a navigator, u must say left right or straight. not the road name.
I was thinking: shit. dead. lets hope my guess is correct.
Luckily I was, if not I would have gotten the whole car of us lost and prbably slaughtered. haha.. that would not have been nice. the outlet stuff are pretty cheap. Bought 3 t-shirts only. Really should have bought more but time was limited and i don't really like my shopping to be rushed.
2 nights ago, we invited 3 jap girls to our apt for dinner. so thats like total of ~7 of us (me, ay, lawr, susan(apt mate)). On the way to lessons and back home, met some friends. And we visited their apt and went over to visit another apt. Along the way here and there, words about the dinner spread. So the ball started rolling and in the end, it became a huge DINNER PARTY for about 16 people. Some brought food over to cook as well. haha.. the feeling is quite nice. cosy.
Lawrence tried cooking=) I really have to laugh because he is hilarious. Gosh. His kitchen is just so messy. Salty salty salty. haha.. buck up!! For a first attempt, at least the food were all cooked=) haha.. yf. stop saying that we cant cook!
And by the way, people are the most scary of the lot. People who stands by my window and calls my name in a low voice especially when im concentrating on chatting on msn ought to be knocked. haha.. its freaking scary can?! Tyler!! and Lawr, why on earth did u bring him over for?!
The Thais stood by 2 sides of the pavement and open a passage for me to pass! was on the way home from school. And because I know one of them, its not too nice to just by-pass. So I followed slowly behind them. ba. 1 2 3! turn and face me. *confused. WHAT HAPPENED?!* 'u want to cross first? cause we are walking very slowly' "OK~ Thanks!" *faster walk faster walk* haha=D
Today, there was a BBQ at the Goleta Beach for international students. It was a misty day. Couldnt really catch the sea until the sun finally decided to peak. Off ay, Susan and i went to albertsons and trader's joe to get grocery. Its a saturday and we waited a full 30min for the bus that we were not sure if it was going to come. Scorching sun. haha.. After the episode, we were so tired that we declined all invitations to parties, cinemas etc etc. haha.. just want to stay in my apt and do my laundry. Dinner was chilli prawn. Darn. didnt know that the chilli is so spicy and i added 3 whole table spoon. its really REALLY spicy when i say that it is. gosh. haha.. but now i know. nothing more than 1 table spoon next time. shrimps chicken fish veg fruits. whoa. haha.. i love eating=)
It would have been nice with harmony. Perhaps. I guess. Somehow.
Neutrality and harmony.

Cali @ First Glance

It really takes an effort to maintain my blog over here. But since I promised, it makes it easier to get to doing it;)
Oh yay. IM in CALI! haha.. things are pretty different here. I wouldnt say that I have gotten used to it? But its kinda like some sort of surface acceptance I guess. Gotta learn to open to people who are different from me, talk different, look different. Nah. i guess i'll get used to it with abit of time.
Took a 16hr flight (counting in-flight time only) and finally reaching LA. I guess there is not much of a jet lag because I followed instructions from the school to eat when they serve and sleep when they off the lights. so that adaptation on the plane itself. The people here in Cali are rather friendly. Unlike what people might portray as distance or discrimination for that matter, I don't really feel any of that around here.
Some interesting facts:
1) THERE ARE CROWS IN THE USA TOO!! haha.. i found that kinda amusing when i arrived at the LA airport. Its like such a Singapore thing to see crows. But NO, they are here too.
2) A Taiwanese working at the LA Airport actually came up and chat? He went 'Konichiwa'. I went 'Im not Jap'. I guess a normal chat couldnt hurt though. Apparently people in Cali generally think of Japan first when they see Asians.
3) ... And then people at downtown asked if we are Vietnamese. ... its Japanese and then Vietnamese. Hell. Another person told me I look Japanese. And im starting to wonder if they know how to differentiate Asians or not. Not that im complaing=) *heh. Japs and Viets are known to be pretty right?*
4) The embarrassing moment: I used to wonder, what is it with Westerners not understanding "Having here or Take away". And so, what goes around comes around. "Its for here or to go?" 'WHAT?!' "Its- for- here- or - to- go?" *BLANK* "Are you going to have it here or to go?" 'OH~ its for HERE'.
5) This should be pretty well known. Branded goods here are cheap. I got a Levis for 16USD. The coach bag was 170USD after 50% off. But I decided not to splurge YET.
6) Got stopped by the traffic police at downtown. thats like whoa. haha.. there were people crossing a CAR-LESS road. We followed. And this police just drove his motorcycle right out of the corner where he must be hiding and went "Hey Ladies" I thought I was going to get a fine or something. But he said "are u visitors? well, you are supposed to cross at the crossings at all times. You know the crossing?" Well, there are times when its good to be able to look blur and keep your mouth to yourself. So yup. Nod your head and open your eyes wide and try to look lost. *Sorry* "Nah, its ok. just remember to cross at the crossing next time." and he smiled at us.
7) Store owners greet their customers as they enter or leave the shop. "How's it going?" and you are to reply "GREAT~ GOOD~AWESOME~" haha.. this is really funny because just about everything is AWESOME~ and you know how they say it? with all the ups-downs tone variation. =D Im learning.
8) The beds here are so high. I guess its to suit the height of the people here. But yea. I can choose between a small JUMP or a little CLIMB to get up MY bed.
9) The sun can be scorching hot. The skies are clear in the day and clouds are rare. Its a dry climate. But the moment you step into the shade, its cool all over again. The winds are chilling. Seriously. I wish i can teleport my jacket on and off me.
10) Chinese/Taiwanese generally think that Singaporeans speak English. Westerners think that Singaporeans speak Chinese. Well, no one really knows the language over here. A couple who have visited Sinagpore would have heard of Singlish=D Thats neither here nor there since I don't know other countries well as well. Thats why im here right?
11) the cars here looks really interesting. they have those with leopard prints and what have you. and the cars look like they have a big nose or something along that line I guess.
12) water taste incredibly powdery due to the calcium content. takes some getting used to though.
13) toilet doors have fine gaps that can be peeped into if anyone had wanted to. and the partitions do not extend to the ground. Minor shock at the LA airport.
14) the size of the 5 cents coins is bigger than that of a dime(10cents). Even the American cashier went "yea. I know it doesnt make sense but.."
15) Raffle! means luckydraw.

From the LA airport, i went to the Tom Bradley Airport to hunt for food. Had Bagel with sour cream. Now. What is a bagel?? Its like bread shaped like a donut. But I guess they do not use self-raising flour because its really compact. Board the Airbus which is really more comfortable then the plane. Couldnt help but fall asleep somewhere along the way. The route to the Goleta stop was really an impressive trip. The Santa Barbara beach is seriously AWESOME. The water sparkles under the sunlight. Its even nicer than the one that I posted a Video on facebook. We shared a cab with a girl from the Neatherlands. The short 1mile journey to our temporary residence, Santa Cruz, cost 20USD! The meter jumps by 30cents for a distance like that between two street lamps! Its freaking expensive! After checking in, we went to Isla Vista, a nearby neighbourhood for dinner. Pasta. I think it tastes better than the ones in Singapore. But we look weird sharing food though.
Pingponged and jogged on the 2nd morning. whoa. its so cold initially until I got warmed up. Its a good start I guess, to healthier lifestyle. But im not sure how long ist going to last. Students here bike/skateboard to school. But since I don't want to endanger to lives of the UCSB students, I have decided not to go ahead with getting a bike. Its expensive anyway. Went to downtown. Food here are all americanized. Chinese at Panda Express serves 'CHOW MEIN' and 'EGG FLOWER SOUP'. Just do a direct translation and you'll get what it means.
Got to meet people form different culture, the japanese, taiwanese, hong kongers, chinese, koreans.. and of course people from england, spain, italy, australia, france, turkey, canada, germany.. its like 'ich vesteche nicht?' 'oh yea!' 'Ohaiyo' 'oh, you know japanese?' I guess they are all really nice. I have to be more pro-active though.
Oh. the 3rd day was spent exploring the school. First exposure to the way people tip at restaurants since Lawr's brother drove us out to Calle Real for dinner. Its Americanized Jap.. and MY! Are the portions large?! Its huge, gigantic! That was a treat. Thanks alot!! You are not as stern as what Lawr made you sound like. Thanks for being nice!
The weather here is nice, the people are nice, the surroundings are nice. I guess, when you are abroad, its alot about trying to be yourself in a different environment. Its takes effort and courage (at least for me) to start a conversation with people who are just different. But after I tried today. cool. they are as curious about me as I am about them. But I guess all of us are a little bit reserved. Its like the I-want-to-talk-to-her-but-im-not-sure-if-she-wants-to kinda thing. but its both ways. PHEW~~Hermits belong in a shell. So im going to promise myself that i'll be hermits no more. Thats how its going to be.
Will be shifting to my apartment tomorrow. Hope everything goes well. Right. My personal motto again: Its just going to get better.
Friends, take care. I will too.

心。满。溢。

Not too sure if its time to blog. Words arent plentiful. Emotions.. some I guess. Eh! I received 3 sets of my birthday presents more than 2months BEFORE my birthday eh. haha.. how nice is that?

2) 1 X big fat Ang Bao from 17/04 - without the red packet

Mentioned the Camera in some previous post before. But anyway, the photos from the previous entries were taken with this new camera yea=) Im a photo freak!! =D
Last sunday, my friends apparently planned a surprise for me. haha.. Like cele my bday way way way before hand when i'll least expect it. hmm.. well. Someone let the cat out of the bag *meow* HAHA. KFC and Cheesecake. I'm super predictable aint I? haha.. my top 2 faves eh! Thanks to the friends who know me so well and for putting in the effort to gather my faves friends! Thanks for coming, TC, Glad, sl, black, ben, amanda, pin. Special Thanks to Glad, Pin, sl for coordinating=) It feels great to have friends. haha.. so im technically 'older' than black now. Just too bad they cele my bday earlier yea=)
'Why is it KFC??'
"cos its Tan Wei Ling"
whoa.
Its 1X big Ang Bao without the redpacket. Anyone doesnt know how it looks like??

I love words. Esp those written with the heart. Those that can strike chords. The wonderful rhythm, the thumping. If I did tear, its because you wrote it out in a manner I have never even realised myself. Yet so true. Partner in crime. Wait for me. I'll be back in a blink. Sometimes its not too good to pop up all over the place. Sometimes people take for granted that you'll be there. But then, you can't be. Toastmaster, Biobiz, Dance, Tennis, Archery, Pistol. That's my newest plan.
Went back to school on a monday for lunch. ha. glad said that im to wake her up. I was sitting in the LT listening to the lecture and trying to get into the mood of lessons all over again. haha.. but im the unstable radical! i exude energy that only people who have experienced it will understand. Glad said she felt less sleepy after I sat beside her. heh. I was literally bouncing into the LT lo. haha.. lesson eh. so exciting=) Finally got to see the common faces. CHE students are always out slacking on Friday evenings that I couldnt even find one of them when I went back last time. hee. so many people thought that I have already left for my exchange. Yup yup. Its monday.
Up-ed by 40cents. I owe PJ 10cents =D If only I can eat 2 more of those fishes. Yummy. Interesting intermission. The 2 of you better stop grinning. ooo.. the White Furry Teddy Bear wallet that I suspect that PJ bought in Msia. haha.. Am I right?? Last year she claimed that Im the blue blue doraemon. This year, she decided to give me a wallet with her self-portrait so that I will not forget her=) I forgot the stand there let you hug hug plan eh. wasted. haha..
eh. I went to the Chinese Doc today. The one whom I used to visit went on a holidays. Im stuck in a mega sized one today, with loads of beds, white towels, fire, needles, bamboo cups etc etc. SOBs la. SAVE ME~ and then I was half-self-scaring when I heard the greatest joke of the day eh. haha.. its super funny can?!
This lady on the bed beside mine had a sore shoulder.
Doc:
*LAUGHS*
Then it was my turn. Darn. haha.. I screamed when its like NOT painful? My first ever acupuncture eh. Can't even feel the needles. but yup. I went AHHHH~ The Doctor must hate me now. Now my foot looks like I have wrapped popiah skin around it yea. The Doctor asked me to get ankle guard before I fly. DUN WAN LA~ bleahz. I have knee, elbow and wrist guard liao eh! I don;t want to collect the complete set la!!
Paiseh. Im just quite amused.
Been waking up with a fast thumping heart. Like Im all ready to get into action. Its the exams feeling eh. Other than the fact that you wouldnt catch me jumping out of bed. Thanks wen for lending me cold weather wear. So I don't have to go buy. IM sorry for the mess I made.
Its now 60 hours before I fly.

My Foot

I went shopping with wen and miao on thursday, had lunch, and pretty much rot our time away in Kbox at Suntec.
The first two lines are TERRIBLE, HORRIBLE.
Glad: ha. Art ma.

Many Thanks=)

Happy Birthday to gor gor!! hee. even though u are really one round elfish mouse, but i still love u loads as my elder brother=) thanks for entertaining me when im sian, stressed, bored. Thanks for buying bread for me during my library trips if not my lazy self will just let myself starve. Thanks for waiting for me whenever im late to meet u at sci. Thanks for having double standards and not letting me drink. Thanks for teasing me and letting me tease u back. and last of all, thanks for being my brother. GOR GOR~~你这只白老鼠!!=D Everytime i think of those cards that I drew for you, a smile forms on my face. Especially that one I drew when u entered army. darn. its so cute. I can't believe anyone can be as funny as me. 老鼠, pumping position down! =p gosh. aint u super entertained by me=)
Had 四川火锅at pin's house. Why I left out the麻辣part was because she excluded 青椒from her recipe. Wah. Its really a nice night out with friends eh. Just sitting on the floor around a home cooked steamboat, chit-chatting about stuff and making a fool of ourselves. 幸福is actually that simple. haha. eh!! glad learnt how to crack an egg with ONE hand. haha.. the funniest thing was the cakes that Glad bought. We concluded that they are called cheese cake and tiramisu because it says so. The baker wrote "Cheese" and "Tiramisu" across the cake. I pretty much like the texture of the cake that glad claimed was the cheap version. But I just couldn't tell that they are who the baker claim them to be=) And then, all of us were fighting to do the housework. Actually, Glad and TC were fighting. I was like, you can do since you want to=p Its really nice to have friends that close to heart.
And one would have supposed that with Raffles City so small, it should have been easy to meet a friend there. But NO. I had the hardest time in my life trying to locate glad. Her phone was faulty and she couldnt hear what I was saying. And apparently, there were two Starbucks? and the plan to wait at Adidas was headed for failure since glad decided to wait at the entrance facing the exterior of raffles city and me at the entrance within raffles city. haha.. I have gone about 3 months not wearing clothes of the same colour as a friend. You know. Zero默契. I think this can rank number 2 on the chart! Luckily JR was there! *Phew Sweat*
Wanted to specially mention that I got my first 21st bday present! A Nikon camera from gor gor and pong! haha.. hehe.. Any friends out there who doesn't know of my obsession with photographs and jackets please deny saying that you know me very well. haha.. and I lombang my brothers to buy external hardisk for me la. Don't have to go squeeze with people during Comex=)
And I got my first ever bonus eh! My last tuition with my tuition kid! whoa. I didnt realise until i reach home. So happy eh.
There are so many nice people in my life that sometimes I feel that I should be satisfied. Thanks for being around ad brightening up every day!
